Choosing a Care Home

Choosing the right care home, whether for you, a friend or a relative is an important decision and one that can be a little daunting. There are many excellent care homes. The key to finding the right care home is making a decision based on where they will feel most comfortable and relaxed.

All care homes have their own unique feel, so one of the best pieces of advice is to visit as many homes as you can and form your own opinion. You need to be happy with all aspects of the home from the minute you walk through the door until you leave. Ask questions about the type of service provided, talk to other residents and staff, in doing so you will be able to form an opinion of the care home.  A Good home will always be happy to show you around, answer questions and give advice.

To get started on finding your perfect Care Home:

  • If possible get personal recommendations, perhaps from friends, family or a G.P
  • The care quality commission inspect all homes in the UK. Their website is a useful resource and contains both ideas for some of the questions you should ask prior to your visit and individual reports for each care home.  http://www.cqc.org.uk/
  • When you visit the home make a point of talking to the staff and residents, enabling you to gauge their opinion, this will allow you to form your own opinion about the home.
  • Try and arrange for the potential resident to spend the day, before committing to a final decision.
